Consignment vs. Outright Sale: Which Gets You More Money?

The answer depends on your timeline, risk tolerance, and the item itself. We break down the math and the tradeoffs so you can make the right call for your situation.

When you bring an item to The Imperial Bargains, you have a choice: sell it outright for immediate cash, or consign it for a higher potential return. Neither option is universally better — the right choice depends on your specific situation.

Outright Sale: Speed Over Maximum Return

In an outright sale, we purchase your item immediately at a price we agree on. You walk out with cash the same day. We take on all the risk — if the item doesn't sell, that's our problem, not yours.

  • Pros: Immediate cash, zero risk, no waiting
  • Cons: Lower payout (typically 40–60% of estimated retail value)
  • Best for: When you need cash quickly, or for lower-value items where consignment fees aren't worth it

Consignment: Patience Pays

In a consignment arrangement, we sell your item on your behalf and take a commission starting at 15% when it sells. You receive the remaining proceeds. For high-value items, this can mean significantly more money than an outright sale — and we handle everything: photography, listing, buyers, and logistics.

  • Pros: Higher payout, we handle all the work, multi-channel exposure
  • Cons: No guaranteed timeline, money tied up until sale
  • Best for: Items over $200, rare or specialty pieces, items with strong collector demand

The math: A $1,000 item sold outright might net you $500–$600. The same item on consignment with our low commission starting at 15% nets you significantly more. For a $5,000 item, the difference can be $1,000 or more in your pocket.

The Hybrid Approach

For estate lots with a mix of high and low-value items, we often recommend a hybrid: outright purchase for the bulk of lower-value items (quick cash, clears the space), consignment for the high-value pieces (maximizes return on what matters most).
